It’s a Supernatural Thing

pyrateheartpress • Feb 19, 2020

Yvonne asked me if I would consider writing a guest blog on the Rant. She asked me to write about something I like. I like many things, but what I love is the Supernatural. What girl doesn’t adore a good VAMPIRE story? I think Vampires are by far the most romantic and enticing literature characters in the World today. All I can say is God Bless Anne Rice. She brought the World her vision of Vampires and the rest of us have consumed her books ever since.

I live and breathe for something other than the normal, plain vanilla World we live in. I look for Ghosts, Goblins, Fairies and Vampires. I look for Frodo, Bilbo and Wizards. I daydream over Werewolves and wish I could be a Witch at Hogwarts. I, like so many other women, pray for a supernatural bad boy to sweep me off my feet and keep me happy in the naughty kind of way some of us women dream of. I have spent most of my life living in two Worlds. I spend my “normal” life in “reality”. I pay bills, I work, and I dream of other things as I do these responsible, adulting type things. I have to admit, I don’t much care for adulting . It sucks the life out of you. I prefer to think about a smooth talking dark eyed Vampire breathing on my neck. I do prefer the Vampires to most of the other forms of supernatural beings . I think they are so sexy. Speaking of sexy, the boys of Supernatural are sexy. Just saying. I like the Angels and Demons and other curiosities the show presents, but in the end, I watch it for Sam and Dean .

When Ross approached me to consider picking up on a couple of stories he’d started, honestly, I really wasn’t interested. I have my own stories in the works and wanted to concentrate on those. However, when he told me he wanted me to interject certain hidden pieces of supernatural beings into the stories, I couldn’t resist. I won’t let you in on what parts of my two books, The Final Fix of A. Female Stone and The Librarian’s Tale ; contain supernatural elements. Nor will I tell you what kind of supernatural beings are present. All I can tell you is they are hidden there and show themselves when you least expect them. Which makes for the best way to experience the supernatural. Remember the movie the Sixth Sense . Was I the only one who didn’t know Bruce Willis’s character was a Ghost until the end? It took me by complete surprise, and I loved it.

Of course, there is the other side of the fence. The Stephen King fans. King gets you right out of the gate with his horror stories. Horror like his is grounded in the supernatural. All his best horror has supernatural elements to them. Except for Misery . What a book! I couldn’t stop myself. I had to read the story to the end. T.V. now is overrun with supernatural stories. They even brought back Sabrina . The problem with so many of these supernatural style stories is they often suffer from stereotypes. The characters lose themselves in the teenage girl versions we are subject to. I like the characters to have depth. I have been spoiled over the years by great writers and great stories which made for great movies. I don’t do bad ones. I will turn them off or throw them away. Bad stories ruin the genre and I won’t allow myself to be assaulted by such nonsense. If it’s good, I will enjoy it. If it’s bad, I will enjoy getting rid of it.

What is your favorite type of supernatural stories? Do you prefer Ghost stories? Horror? Vampires (my favorite), Werewolves? Fairies, Witches, Wizards and Quests? I can speak from experience. I like them all. I have read most all the great writers and even took the time to read Bram Stokers Dracula . It is quite a different read than the movies. A bit harder to read too. I wanted to read the one that started them all. I even read Mary Shelley’s original Frankenstein . It too was not what I expected but I found I enjoyed it. I get to explore a different and often overlooked supernatural character in my newest project. Gargoyles . I can’t tell you much right now, but it is exciting to be able to write a story around a Gargoyle and a Witch. Ross has given me free reign. All he told me was the story had to be good. I believe it is, but I will leave it up to you once I finish it. It’s going to be so much fun.

My cats need feeding and so do I. I enjoyed my visit with you and maybe I will do another one of these blog posts in the future. Talk about the bad boys of supernatural romance stories and why we like them so much.

I bid you ADIEU .

Most people who tell others they are authors work independently from the requirements of corporations or even normal jobs. Their job is to create. To craft stories we want to read.

It’s a good question. One I have heard many times in my life. Usually after somebody does something no one approves of. Yet, regardless of the situation, the question remains the same. Do people change?

I have discovered many things recently. The very first is I love the bed and breakfast we stayed in for our anniversary. It is an inventive idea for a bed and breakfast type place. The rooms are actual cabooses. That’s right, railroad cabooses.
