Let’s talk about Sex

At least, about how much sex should be included in a manuscript or story. It’s a good question. One I think about quite often as well is how much violence or drugs or abuse, etc.? Well you get the idea. Each story is unique. Each story has its own requirements.

When we started out, we were listed as an uncensored publisher . I didn’t want to inhibit my authors. I wanted them to write the scenes they considered necessary for the story to be true to its content. A hard thing to do. Truth is always a hard thing. Especially when it involves representations of sex.

So how much sex do I allow in the works I publish? The answer is, as much as it takes to make the story good. It varies. In the Pan’s Naughty Flutes series, the sex is often graphic. It’s a series of hardcore erotica stories. Note the word hardcore. The series was always going to represent sex in an erotic manner with deeply descriptive renditions of sex in the forms the author needed to be true to her story. The series would not be authentic without the graphic nature of the sex.

However, is this necessary in all erotic novels or books? No. Not at all. A lot of the stories work much better with innuendo. Hints. The sex is implied.

Erotica is a world unto itself. It ranges from the graphic and extreme to the sublime. When I edit such works, I look towards the story first. What type of story is it? Is it a love story where sex is included? Is it simply a sex story? Is it a thriller where sex is implied? The list inside the genre is as varied as the writers themselves.

Did you catch the last question? A thriller where sex is involved. Sex is a part of our lives. We are human . Sex happens all the time. In many ways and in many versions. It is not limited to specific genres. Again. How much sex should be included in a story? Again, the answer is as much as it takes to make the story authentic.

How do I decide this? Often it centers on the main characters. If a character isn’t a hardcore type, then the sex wouldn’t be graphically described. If the character is a romantic type the answer is the same. The need for graphic depictions isn’t there. In fact, it would detract from the story. Sex must reflect the characters themselves. Much like real life.

What about rape ? I was recently asked why I included a hardcore depiction of rape in Ronnie’s Revenge. The answer is simple. It was necessary. The depiction is horrid and painful. It’s a realistic rendition of how bad rape is. I saw no reason to gloss over the rape. I wanted to show the world how horrific rape is. How else to demonstrate to those who have never lived it than to depict it in a true fashion?

I make no apologies for the nature of sex I use it the books I publish. Some is meant to arouse. Others are meant to demonstrate how people react to sex . Cheyenne in The Trouble in Nunya becomes ill when she even thinks about sex due to her own abuse as a child. In Milly , we deal with a woman who is paralyzed from the belly button down. She has no physical feelings in her vagina. Yet her body still produces urges. She still desires men and yet? I’ll let you read the book…

Sex is a part of our lives. Why not show sex in its true form as the author intended ? Or do you prefer the politically correct versions or the sanitized ones ? I don’t. I want to feel what the characters feel. I want the story to draw me into it. I want to see the world through the storyteller’s eyes. Don’t you agree?

Most people who tell others they are authors work independently from the requirements of corporations or even normal jobs. Their job is to create. To craft stories we want to read.

It’s a good question. One I have heard many times in my life. Usually after somebody does something no one approves of. Yet, regardless of the situation, the question remains the same. Do people change?

I have discovered many things recently. The very first is I love the bed and breakfast we stayed in for our anniversary. It is an inventive idea for a bed and breakfast type place. The rooms are actual cabooses. That’s right, railroad cabooses.
