Playing Hooky

pyrateheartpress • Oct 15, 2021

I am sitting here once again looking at a blank piece of digital parchment without a clue as to what I wish to say to you, our readers. It’s not for a lack of material. No, it is more of a lack of empathy right now. See I don’t want to write right now.

Silly huh? Not wanting to write. I adore writing. I enjoy editing and putting together books. I think I like the entire process. I even enjoy these little forays into writing articles for you to read. And yes, these are simply articles meant for a small magazine or newsprint when you get right down to it.

And yet? I find myself not wanting to write about much of anything today. I owe my Wifesty a blogpost. I have scores of titles and lists of subjects to write on. I also have no desire to look at any of my lists and craft a post between 500 and 1500 words. My heart is not into it.

What is my heart into right now? Napping. As you get older the concept of a nap is incredible. The application of taking an afternoon nap is even more so. I find I both want and need a nap in the afternoon. Not sure why of course but napping is high on my list of what to do today other than work.

Work? Yep, you got it. I am playing hooky from work. Not really all the way hooky. I mean if I was really playing hooky from work, I would take my Wifesty Yvonne to the local bar, enjoy some cold drinks and shoot some pool or play darts. Though as I sit here the idea of bowling seems extraordinarily pleasant.

Not much of these things have happened over the course of Covid. Covid truly put a stop to so many fun things. Like going to the movies. I know that going to the theatre is now allowed but it just doesn’t seem the same. I want all this Covid nonsense to finish. I want to stop wearing a mask, not have to take anymore vaccines and get on with life.

I know. You do too. While I don’t particularly like whining when I write, please allow me this last little bit. I am so over Covid. So over it.

You know what else I am over right now? The television series Yellowstone. I have binged watched all three seasons on Peacock and am so ready for more. I think Kevin Costner created a great show. I hope he can find the stories he needs to keep it going though. I think it will run out soon, but I want to watch every last show until it does.

I like Westerns but it is hard to craft a good one these days. I am not sure why, but Yellowstone seems to have found a way. If you haven’t watched it, do so. You won’t regret it.

I binge watch television. I simply do. We recently binge watched all the Harry Potter movies. We will soon be binging on the Guardian of the Galaxy movies. Television is where I go when I want to turn my mind off.

Like last night. Last night wasn’t a great night for us. We had some issues we are still working on, but we had lost all our drive to do anything, so we plopped ourselves down in front of the TV with our totally spoiled dog. What we ended up watching was the updated version of The A-Team .

What a hoot. It had its serious moments of course, but The A-Team was always about campiness. I mean they sprayed thousands of bullets in the original series and never hit anything. Never really hurt anyone either.

I loved the sarcastic way they treated everything in the movie. It made us laugh, and in the end, sometimes that is all you really need. Someone or something to make you laugh while you play hooky.

Most people who tell others they are authors work independently from the requirements of corporations or even normal jobs. Their job is to create. To craft stories we want to read.

It’s a good question. One I have heard many times in my life. Usually after somebody does something no one approves of. Yet, regardless of the situation, the question remains the same. Do people change?

I have discovered many things recently. The very first is I love the bed and breakfast we stayed in for our anniversary. It is an inventive idea for a bed and breakfast type place. The rooms are actual cabooses. That’s right, railroad cabooses.
