Abortion. It has come across my desk that the Supreme Court is revisiting Roe v Wade . Now this is important for two reasons. First, it entered the bubble I surround myself with. You know the one. That bubble you surround yourself in to keep the world out so you can get what you need done.

Having caught my attention, I found myself researching the entire issue from when it began in 1973 to now. Having done that, I am presented with two conclusions. One, women will get abortions regardless of the law. And two, the type of care they receive is based directly on whether it is legal or not.

Understand? Let me help you with my idea about abortion. The first thing you have to do is remove the religious thinking from the equation. Most of those who campaign against abortion do not adopt the babies who are created from the situations which create a need for abortions.

I believe it was a nun who was asked about abortion who stated she was not against it because there were plenty to rally against it but few who wanted the children. I am not sure where I heard this from but it’s something I agree with. If you are truly against abortion, then you should be up for adopting those children created by the lack of such a service.

Does this mean I agree with those who use abortion as some sort of birth control? Nope. What was it my mother told me when I was entering puberty? 15 cents of money (the cost of a single condom back then) will prevent a lifetime of raising and caring for a child. Often one you didn’t want in the first place.

Yes, I am for birth control. I am old fashioned about it too. I believe every man should carry a condom with him if he thinks he might, and I mean even if there is the slightest chance, he might have sex. But this blog isn’t about birth control, it is about the right for a woman to be able to choose to terminate her pregnancy.

That is what Roe v Wade was ultimately about. The decision to allow a woman the legal right to choose to abort a child or to continue with the pregnancy. Notice I said legal. Why? Because long before it was legal, and the clinics were supervised to a certain degree, abortions still happened.

Who were having these abortions? Often, scared young girls who found themselves in a whole mess of trouble. Girls who can’t tell their folks they are pregnant. Girls who decided to break the law and terminate their pregnancy.

How? That would take up an entire blog post to write about the various methods abortionists used to end pregnancies. Methods which often left those who used them in serious medical trouble. Or unable to have children afterwards.

When you make something illegal, does it stop it from happening? NO! God knows it only makes a better market for a service too many will need.

I find myself shaking my head in frustration. I was ten years old when the decision was made. It came with all sorts of conditions which have been modified over the years, but it remained intact. It was legal for a woman to decide what she could do with her own body and that of an unborn child. Period.

And yet there are so many who are opposed to such a thing. What makes it so hard for me to understand is it is often women who are leading the charge to end the Supreme Court decision.

Let’s take men out of the equation for a minute even though it was an older white man who wrote up the decision. In our society, once a girl is pregnant, it becomes her responsibility over what happens.

I know, I know. So many of you are screaming the male must be involved and I agree but does anyone think he has the final vote over what happens? No. It falls on the female to decide. Harsh but true.

I wonder how many women, especially those who are from the fifties and sixties, would want the right to decide what they can do with their own bodies handed over to a court? Why should a woman have to let someone else decide what to do with her body? Do we not live in the Land of Freedom?

Let me wrap this up. I have personally seen the results of abortions before and after Roe v Wade . I prefer clinics where young girls can get counseling to help them decide if they truly want to end the pregnancy or terminate it. I prefer it if the only person who gets to decide is the pregnant person themselves.

I prefer that pregnant women don’t have to go to a place where they can be arrested for having an abortion. And one final note. If you are against abortions, I mean truly against them, then I will stand there and protect your rights as an American to say so. I will never take away your freedom to state your opinion and to act in accordance with your beliefs.

Having said that, I also expect you to remember you live in America where your rights are equal, and I do mean equal, to those who believe in giving women a choice.

Besides, how many people who stand outside abortion clinics offer to adopt the babies? The ones who do truly believe abortions are evil and are willing to take the children. These people I understand. They have profound belief and are willing to do whatever it takes to keep a child from not coming to term. To do so in the most giving way imaginable by adopting the unwanted. The rest are simply making noise and don’t believe in what they are protesting. The ones who bomb clinics are worse. They are true hypocrites since they decide to use murder to end murder. With a bomb no less. How cowardly.

It is the actions we take that our beliefs are displayed. Do we as a nation wish to tell our women that they have no choice over their own bodies? That is not an action I can take or condone.
