Father's Day

R. Ross Whalen • Jun 22, 2021
We just had Father’s Day on Sunday. My son called and we did the Father’s Day talk and all. Truth be told, if it wasn’t for my Wifesty Yvonne, I would forget most holidays, birthdays and anniversaries.

Holidays are hard for me to think about. I know that if you look them up you will find every day of the week for every day of the year is dedicated to some thing or another. Ninety-nine percent of them don’t seem to register with me. I get the big ones though - that is a lie as well.

Christmas was never much of a thing with me. I know, with me being a born-again Christian that should be a cardinal sin.

However, I worked on Christmas most of my life. When everyone else would go home me and the other guys would go in to do work we couldn’t do when people were there. Sad but true.

We did Christmas on the Saturday after it hit unless it actually did hit on a Saturday or Sunday. Then we did it after I got home. I normally worked nights, so it never did interfere with the whole Christmas morning thing.

I have forgotten my own birthday. I have forgotten it many times. I have had to be reminded when my son’s birthday is. It is a sad thing really.

There are two holidays I don’t forget. Thanksgiving and Easter. I don’t work either. Why? There is food involved. They both take all day to make the food and you spend all day eating as you prepare it. Yes, I get involved in the cooking. I am not one of those fellas who sit in front of the TV and wait for the women to make the dinner. Me and Yvonne get involved in cooking on these days. It is a lot of fun and I enjoy myself.

Now we have Father’s Day and Yvonne reminded me of it on Friday and my son called on Sunday so I couldn’t forget it. The day was a great success for me too. It was lazy. Yes, l-a-z-y. sometimes you simply need to be lazy. Just chill out and forget the world for a moment.

We have bills we have to pay of course and work that has to be done. If I have learned anything working as a publisher and freelancer is that you must always be hustling and working. Yet, it is easy to get burned out. Sometimes you just have to let go and let God. God has been handling things far longer and better than me and on Father’s Day I let go and let Him.

We watched an inordinate amount of a show called Rizzoli and Isles. Violated our Keto regimen. Well, I did anyways. I drank sodas, beer, and helped myself to chips and dip. Watched more movies and more TV. Unwound.

Happy Father’s Day to all. I hope your grilling or other activities went as you liked. For me and mine, it most certainly did.

Most people who tell others they are authors work independently from the requirements of corporations or even normal jobs. Their job is to create. To craft stories we want to read.

It’s a good question. One I have heard many times in my life. Usually after somebody does something no one approves of. Yet, regardless of the situation, the question remains the same. Do people change?

I have discovered many things recently. The very first is I love the bed and breakfast we stayed in for our anniversary. It is an inventive idea for a bed and breakfast type place. The rooms are actual cabooses. That’s right, railroad cabooses.
