Ordinary Things

R. Ross Whalen • Sep 21, 2020
I am fascinated by ordinary things since I have become a publisher. See, ordinary things are removed from books, movies and series. Thinks about it. How often do characters you like do dishes? Clean the toilet? Do laundry or any of number of chores we do daily or at least weekly. How many settle in after dinner or during dinner for that matter and watch television?

Books and other entertainment devices remove such ordinary things. No one watches television in the eBooks I read nor the series I like to watch. No one. Nor do they do chores or suffer the ordinary. Which is the point. Ordinary is boring to most who read or watch. They can do ordinary on their own. Why read about it?

Unless the ordinary becomes extra-ordinary. I have spent a great deal of time letting this issue brew inside my head for a long time. It’s all Miranda’s (Miranda Cummings) fault. Miranda and I got together several years ago over a comment made in some chat in some godforsaken Facebook group. I don’t remember what the issue was, but we continued the debate long after the chat was closed. We were on separate sides of the fence as always.

Miranda and I continued to email back and forth. Continued to argue about everything. Neither of us willing to give an inch in our discussions. Until one day I said something like I didn’t believe chores could be sexy. There was no way anyone could make something as mundane as washing dishes into a sensual affair.

Miranda took that as a challenge. A personal one since she considers herself my resident expert on erotica. (Don’t tell her this but she is). She did her research. She owns an entire library of erotica from the softest of romance styles to the hardest of hardcore. Erotica is her favorite style to read and write. Though she admitted to me she does enjoy a good vampire novel every now and then. Of course, I reminded her she only liked the vampire genre because it was inherently sensual. At this point she called my westerns soap operas for boys. (they are by the way)

We argued back and forth but she could not produce anything worthwhile. So, she wrote one. She titled it Sensual Dishes. A hard-core piece of erotica written as a short story. A good piece of erotica wrapped around the act of washing dishes. An ordinary act turned into something extraordinary. Miranda won the argument of course. She has never let me forget it either.

We planned on doing an entire series of ordinary acts transformed into sensual affairs. However, other projects took precedent. Still, the idea remained in the back of my mind. You ask what other genres could an ordinary act be turned extraordinary?

The idea has percolated for a long time. I wondered what could happen when someone washes dishes? What if Miranda’s vampires invaded? Would it be the sensual acts she envisions, or would it be more of the horror of a Stephen King style? What would happen if the person doing dishes dies in the middle and continues as a ghost? Or finds themselves facing their own final judgement with a dish in their hand?

What about other genres? A western? People on the plains moving across the country had to do dishes. Or do something Syfy? How do they do dishes in the future? Could the act of doing dishes be turned into a romance or thriller or a mystery? Why limit it to these genres? There are so many different genres out there. Why not have some old man washing dishes as he recalls his life? Or a young adult who spends the time with their grandma learning about life?

I have asked myself these same questions. So, tell me something, what ordinary act do you do that can be turned into something extra-ordinary. What would the action be and what genre would you change it into? Sex, thrills, terror, romance or mystery? Or maybe something else entirely. Would love to know.

Most people who tell others they are authors work independently from the requirements of corporations or even normal jobs. Their job is to create. To craft stories we want to read.

It’s a good question. One I have heard many times in my life. Usually after somebody does something no one approves of. Yet, regardless of the situation, the question remains the same. Do people change?

I have discovered many things recently. The very first is I love the bed and breakfast we stayed in for our anniversary. It is an inventive idea for a bed and breakfast type place. The rooms are actual cabooses. That’s right, railroad cabooses.
