Whats Happening Now

R. Ross Whalen • Dec 20, 2020
I thought I would start this blog with that very question. What is happening at The Pyrateheart Press now?

Well, we published the second in the Cheyenne series titled The Rescue of Rhonda. Another supernatural thriller filled with twists and turns and the unexpected. A good read for those who enjoy the unexpected.

We just closed out our first contest for those who seek to be published in our short story anthology titled From the Ordinary to the Extraordinary. We have several new entries and hope to have a few more before we begin judging. The contest focused on stories about ordinary events which morph into extraordinary occurrences.

The genres were open. We have thrillers and erotica, mystery, and dark comedy. We have a children’s entry and the supernatural. I am looking forward to putting this anthology together. Especially since we asked for short stories and flash fiction only.

I am a fan of both. It takes a certain flare to produce good flash fiction. Even more when you can do it in six words. The short story field also requires its own unique take on writing skills. So often we look for the novel length or the epics that we forget the great short stories and how awesome the writing is inside such shorter versions.

We have several freelance works happening as well. We do work outside of our own publishing. We are in the process of completing an insurance handout that will become both an eBook and an actual handout. Yvonne handled this one and I must say it is both professional and precise in the formatting, the layout, and the use of grammar. I am proud of this work.

We also are deep in the throes of producing an art book for a local artist. He is producing three in the series. A set of workbooks he will use to teach artists the fine points of the craft. For us it had taught us a great deal about the use of illustrations and artwork inside a document and how it affects the conversion process when you want to turn it into an eBook.

It will be a great piece of formatting let me tell you. We also have a fashion book we are helping another author turn into an eBook. Another set of lessons for us as we learn the tiny bits of necessary work to complete such tasks.

On top of this we have another thriller coming out in February called Ronnie’s Revenge. Ronnie’s Revenge is a Christian thriller. A Christian book that follows a young woman’s life after she has been beaten and raped and left for dead only to be betrayed by those she sought help from.

An interesting look from a darker perspective of Christianity. The book’s chapters lead off with a biblical quotation that gives the reader some insight into the chapter. A warning though. This is a dark, hard book. A must read for those of us who call ourselves Christians. Who better to look at the darker side of humanity than people who believe in the light?

We are continuously updating our social media and expanding into some of the local publishing groups. Making a bit of noise so people will be able to find us and find our books. Yvonne is hustling up work for us on the freelance side as I continue to edit and work with authors.

On a great note, we are legal! Yes, legal. We have our tax certificate, a business account with the bank and are working on our taxes. Ugh, taxes. However, paying taxes is all part of being legal. It feels good to have a piece of paper on the wall which tells you that you are an accepted business entity.

We have the books up to date and we are actually sending out our royalty payments and statements for our authors own tax work. We have SWAG to give away and are happily looking forward to giving it to you. I want everyone to have something which says The Pyrateheart Press on it.

We have about 20 other projects in the works. We are busy and hope to get even more so. Care to help?

If you have a book in your heart, why not reach out to us and see if we can make it a reality?

Most people who tell others they are authors work independently from the requirements of corporations or even normal jobs. Their job is to create. To craft stories we want to read.

It’s a good question. One I have heard many times in my life. Usually after somebody does something no one approves of. Yet, regardless of the situation, the question remains the same. Do people change?

I have discovered many things recently. The very first is I love the bed and breakfast we stayed in for our anniversary. It is an inventive idea for a bed and breakfast type place. The rooms are actual cabooses. That’s right, railroad cabooses.
