Writing Times

R. Ross Whalen • May 04, 2021
It is five thirty a.m. as I write this. The house is quiet. The dog is on the sofa snuggled in deep. My wife is in the bedroom in the same position. As I said, it is quiet. Which is how I like it when I write. I like absolute quiet when I write and the best times to get such quiet is when no one is awake.

Now that is my personal preference. I thought about this as I was thinking about how best to advise someone on writing times. I understand one person’s preferences are much different than others. For example, sometimes I like to listen to music when I write, and other times I find it utterly and totally distracting.

The method I use to write is on a PC. I have no care or concern about how I write yet others prefer to use pen and paper and still more find they like using old style typewriters. To each their own. Which is the message of this blog post by the way. To each their own.

One of those things I read when I first got started was, I needed to write every day. I find this to be constricting. It is like playing poker day in and day out. At first you improve, but then it becomes routine and then you stop paying attention. In poker you lose your money and in writing you lose your edge.

You have to decide if you need to write, or you have to write. Big difference. If you are on a deadline you have to write. If you have a story inside you that must get out, then you need to write. And this is one of those items which defines a writer. Some only write their best when under the gun of a deadline. Others wilt and fail.

Look at the way you work and decide which is you. then learn to write accordingly. As I said, to each their own.

Look at your choice of where you write as well. The famous poet, Maya Angelou, writes in hotel rooms. She developed a routine and stuck to it. Many of the world’s top writers develop a routine that works for them and they follow it. Routines are comfortable and often writing requires comfort. But sometimes it doesn’t.

Other writers prefer the uncomfortable side in their lives when writing to give them that edge to write horror and terror and fear. I do not know which is best. I am no expert. I am simply showing you the options a writer can chose to find their best writing time and place. To each their own.

Choose what works best for you. If you can’t think sitting down, then write standing up. If you can’t find a routine time to write, then write when and how you can. Napkins at bars make for great note pads to jot down plot lines or character sheets.

In the end, you have to find what you prefer. Then you have to find happy mediums if you wish to succeed because life happens around you all the time. The kids cry, the dishes need to be done, the bills need to be paid, and the dog just pee’d on the carpet. Life happens. Deal with it in the manner you do and let your mind continue to write as you wipe the baby’s bottom and search for a time to put it all down on paper.

As I said – To Each Their Own.

Most people who tell others they are authors work independently from the requirements of corporations or even normal jobs. Their job is to create. To craft stories we want to read.

It’s a good question. One I have heard many times in my life. Usually after somebody does something no one approves of. Yet, regardless of the situation, the question remains the same. Do people change?

I have discovered many things recently. The very first is I love the bed and breakfast we stayed in for our anniversary. It is an inventive idea for a bed and breakfast type place. The rooms are actual cabooses. That’s right, railroad cabooses.
